Last Friday – it being the last Friday of the month – we held another SEO clinic at The Birch Hotel in Haywards Heath. We welcomed two business owners to come and talk about their businesses, their website, search engine optimisation (SEO) and digital marketing in general. What’s more we didn’t charge them a penny for the 45 minutes allocated to each consultation – or for the preparation we put in beforehand.
The first consultation was with Zarina Calver, owner of HR consultancy, Sussex People Solutions. Although Zarina’s experience in Human Resources is vast, her business is relatively new. After introducing the topic of SEO and the main ranking factors, we talked about her business objectives, her website, the search terms she could target which might provide the best returns (demonstrated using the Google Keyword Planner) and how to create content to attract those searches. In addition we talked about creating a Google My Business listing and the positive impact this should have on branded searches for her business. Finally we spoke briefly about how her competitors were ranking for specific terms and how she could compete.
The second consultee on the day was Sarah Monaghan, owner of Connected Copy – an international journalist who has started her own business providing copywriting services, which include writing optimised content for websites. Naturally her knowledge of SEO was advanced and the focus for the discussion quite different from the previous – Zarina would admit herself that when it comes to SEO she’s a novice – but maybe less so after this session!
The conversation started with a general discussion about SEO and how we both try to stay informed about what the main thought-leaders have to say on the topic. We then moved on to spend some time analysing the wonderfully rich and insightful data available since Sarah connected her site to Google Analytics and the Google Search Console. Each provide vast amounts of information that can influence the content you create and the environment within which it’s created – as well as provide hugely valuable information about the search terms that bring organic traffic to your site. If your site is not registered with either of these free tools, then do it today!
The conversation moved on the discuss social media strategy, link building and other more advanced SEO topics.
The feedback received on the day was extremely positive – and in the review that Sarah kindly posted on our Google page (below).
