You need to complete your Google My Business profile to maximise the chances of your business being listed on the local pack and Google Maps.
We can help ensure your profile has been completed appropriately – using our knowledge of Google’s guidelines, which we’ve written a summary of for your convenience – and in this article we expand on what we’ll do and how much it’ll cost.
We always start the process, whether you have a verified profile or not, with a structured consultation, or consultations, of up to one hour. We are looking to establish as much information as possible to ensure we optimise your business profile efficiently. We’ll also check your business is eligible and discuss the merits and demerits of service-area business listings.
Profile set up and verification
If you don’t have a profile, we ask that you claim and verify your listing using their own Google account, and add us to the account so we can manage it for them. When you receive your verification code in the post from Google, confirming your business address, we ask you to send this to us to complete the set up.
Should you already have an active profile (i.e. it has a number of reviews attached to it), but it either isn’t linked to your own Google account, or you don’t have access, we’ll work with you, and Google, to move your profile to your account.
Populating your business profile
We will provide you with a form to complete which we’ll then review. We’ll suggest up to five categories for your business and compose your business description for you. Categories play a very important part in determining whether or not your business ranks for the search queries you’re looking to target.
Posts provide you with the facility to promote specific news about your business, and are displayed in your Knowledge Panel. This could be news about the business, events, special offers, products or something else completely.
When published they occupy a particularly prominent place, especially on mobile, albeit only for a week. If they are published well in advance of an upcoming event, they’ll be retained until the event itself.
In the consultation we’ll look to establish what Posts you might like to create and provide some insight on how we’d recommend we create these for you.
We strongly recommend our clients ask their clients to leave a review about their products or service on their Google My Business profile, alongside their other chosen channels. We believe that having the review stars next to the business name when they are returned on the local pack (see below), has a big influence on whether the searcher clicks on their business, or another.
In addition, if you collect enough reviews, you’ll see a highly rated attribute appears on your profile (mobile only!)
We’ll support you in building your Google reviews, and provide you with some tips and tools to manage the process.
Photos and videos
We encourage our clients to upload relevant images and/or videos to their profiles, and to keep them updated. You need to upload at least two videos – which should be no longer than 30 seconds each – for them to show on your profile on mobile devices. We’ll work with you to choose up to 10 images or videos, size them appropriately and upload them on your behalf to get you started.
Questions and answers
We recommend our clients respond promptly to questions asked about their business, via the Knowledge Panel. The reason we suggest there’s some urgency, is that anyone has the opportunity to answer these questions, however the business owner, or managers of the profile, will receive notification of any questions, so they have a head start!
We also suggest that businesses, who don’t have any questions asked, or a small number that aren’t relevant, create some questions and answers of their own. We’ll work with you to establish what the best questions to add might be, how to respond to them and we’ll upload a maximum of five to your profile. This might sound contrary to Google’s guidelines, but they’ve actually suggested that this is good practice.
