Keyword rank tracking is the process of monitoring the position of a content snippet or a business listing in the Local Pack or Local Finder for a specific search term – aka query, aka keyword – on a Search Engine Results Page (SERP).
These rankings are influenced by many things including the location where the search was conducted and what device was used, and rankings can be tracked as often as daily.
We know it’s very important to track these, ahem, ups and downs.
Deciding which keyword rankings to track is a very important decision. Tracking fluctuations in rankings will alert an SEO specialist to issues and opportunities. It might be a competitor has risen in the rankings taking your position, or it could be you’ve published a new piece of content that is being received well.
Ultimately it’s a very useful indicator of your organic performance.
We know there is a direct correlation between the position a business is listed in a Local Pack or Local Finder, or the position of a snippet in the organic listings, and the likelihood of either being clicked on. We also know that there are things we can do as SEO’s to influence the chances of our clients snippets being clicked on – so it’s vital to track all of this.
Software companies that provide keyword ranking data charge a considerable amount of money for the service – invariably they charge by the keyword.
Decisions have to made about which device to track the rankings on, since what you see on a mobile SERPs might not be the same as what you see for the same search term on a desktop SERP. Each additional device you decide to track rankings on, doubles the cost.
In addition, you have to consider which location to track the rankings for, as your rankings in one town are likely to be different from another. And you guessed it, for each additional location you select, the cost doubles.
When there’s this many variables, and high costs associated with them, these decisions mustn’t be taken lightly. We’ve thought long and hard about keyword rank tracking since we started providing SEO services back in 2015.
We now have a process, which involves our clients, and have decided to declare how we do it, and offer it as a new standalone service to business owners.

We decided to:
- …switch our default rank tracking device from desktop to mobile
- …track a single location or locations, rather than a county or country
- …adopt a two pronged approach to keyword selection, identifying keywords that are already generating traffic, and those that may not be currently performing, but present attainable opportunities and are desirable.
We also advise how much we charge for this service, highlighting additional costs should a client want to track more than one location or device, or more than the 100 keywords offered by default.
